The Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) has had a long history of addressing medical ethics. Psychiatrist Charles M. Culver, MD, Ph.D. and Dartmouth College philosophy professor Bernard Gert, Ph.D. began the ethics program in the 1970s and before the end of the decade had created a course in medical ethics for their students.
By the 1980s, DHMC had formed the first hospital ethics committee
