The Byrne Family Cancer Research Institute at Norris Cotton Cancer Center was recently founded with a generous gift of $25 million from longtime supporter Mrs. Dorothy Byrne. This institute will transform and accelerate the translation of research to prevent and cure cancer, enhance cancer survivorship, and promote cancer health equity. The institute will enhance cross-campus research efforts, make the next major leap in cancer research and serve as one of the top training grounds for a new generation of physicians and medical leaders to take on the ever-changing nature of the field.

The Byrne Family Cancer Research Institute at Norris Cotton Cancer Center is one of 51 NCI-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the United States, and the only one in northern New England. The Norris Cotton Cancer Center provides a full range of cancer care services including; a dedicated infusion suite, dedicated physicians, nurses, clinical research coordinators, regulatory coordinators, social workers, nutrition counselors, palliative care providers and a complementary care program that supports a wellness approach for body, mind and spirit. 

The Byrne Family Cancer Research Institute at Norris Cotton Cancer Center at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth seeks a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to join the Office of Clinical Research to assist with the planning, implementation and compliance of clinical trials involving cancer treatment medications and devices initiated by Dartmouth investigators, as well as industry-sponsored studies and cooperative group studies.  This is a full time, benefited, salaried position.  No on-call required at this time.  A faculty appointment through Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth will be requested.

What we are seeking:

  • An experienced nurse practitioner or physician assistant with experience in oncology, or a new graduate with experience as an oncology RN.
  • A collaborative team player with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • An autonomous advanced practice provider with clinical expertise and organizational skills.
  • An active learner with an interest in teaching, education, and research.  An academic appointment at the level of Instructor will be awarded through the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with designated physicians and research team members to develop and conduct clinical trials.
  • Implements the standards for research protocols in compliance with regulatory, institutional and external agencies.
  • Participates as a member of the interdisciplinary team to provide continuity of care to patients across various stages of treatment.
  • Participates in the institutional review process, including writing and reviewing protocols
  • Screens patients for protocols, determining patient’s eligibility and participates in the informed consent process.
  • Provides education for patients considering enrollment or enrolled in a clinical trial.
  • Performs complete health history, physical assessment and psychosocial assessment of clinical research patients.
  • Monitors toxicities and assesses clinical responses.
  • Orders laboratory, diagnostic and radiological studies per research protocols.
  • Prescribes medical equipment, devices, physical and occupational therapy and home health services per research protocol.
  • Fully integrates into section functions including multidisciplinary case conferences [tumor boards], faculty meetings, clinical and research education, research and quality improvement projects when applicable. 
  • Actively participate with the Advanced Practice Provider team of the Norris Cotton Cancer Center through attendance of monthly team meetings, journal club, biannual peer review process and annual retreat.
  • Prepares for, participates in and attends required conferences, meetings and committees as requested. 
  • Serves and/or represents DHMC-NCCC at local and national professional educational venues and organizations. 
  • Other duties as requested.

What we offer:

This innovative position is being created to enhance the conduct of clinical research.  The department is supported by clinical research coordinators and regulatory coordinators, each assigned to a unique disease management group or subspecialty.  In addition, clinical research nurses support the efforts of the OCR by screening for eligibility, consenting, enrolling and providing patient-centered care.

APRN Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited APRN program.
  • Board certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) or American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).
  • Eligible for APRN licensure in the State of New Hampshire
  • Eligible for Federal DEA Registration
  • BLS certification
  • Precious oncology experience required, clinical research experience preferred

Physician Assistant Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduate of accredited Physician Assistant program.
  • NCCPA certification.
  • Eligible for PA license in the State of New Hampshire
  • Eligible for federal DEA registration.
  • BLS certification
  • Previous oncology experience required, clinical research experience preferred
